Foreign Investors Withdraw NT$149.9 Billion, 5th Largest on Record
Taiwan Stock Exchange post-market statistics on November 4 showed net buying and selling by the three major institutional investors: foreign and mainland Chinese investors net sold NT$149.8998 billion, about NT$149.9 billion, setting the 5th-largest single-day net sell-off on record, and entering the top ten historical net sell-offs for two consecutive trading days. Investment trusts bought a net NT$27.631 billion against the trend, proprietary dealers recorded net selling of NT$753 million in proprietary trading, and net selling of NT$36.766 billion in hedging operations, with the three major institutional investors net selling a combined 1597.88 hundred million yuan, showing overall selling pressure remained concentrated on foreign investor moves.
Open High, Close Low With 1885-Point Swing, Briefly Falling Below 42000
Taiwan stocks opened higher and moved lower during the day, with the TAIEX opening at 43449.45 points, briefly surging to 43741.54 points in early trading, before selling pressure emerged and the index fell rapidly, hitting an intraday low of 41855.82 points, briefly breaking below the 42000-point integer level, with a high-low swing of 1885.72 points. Buying returned in late trading, narrowing the decline, and the index closed at 42948.91 points, down 358.63 points, or 0.83%, with turnover expanding to 1 trillion 1148.21 hundred million yuan, as trading clearly heated up.
Two Straight Days of 100-Billion-Level Selling, Only Investment Trusts Net Buying
Looking at institutional moves, investment trusts maintained net buying of 276.31 hundred million yuan, becoming a relatively stabilizing force, but still unable to offset the combined selling pressure from foreign investors and proprietary dealers. Notably, foreign investors had just net sold 1073.07 hundred million yuan on the previous trading day, November 3, then the 8th-largest single-day net sell-off on record, with net selling on the 4th increasing by about 425.93 hundred million yuan, marking two consecutive days of 100-billion-level selling pressure, a rare scale.
Market fund flows and the sharp volatility in the broader market have become key short-term indicators for whether Taiwan stocks can stop falling. After consecutive large withdrawals, subsequent foreign buying and selling moves, the sustainability of investment trust support, and whether trading volume stays elevated, will affect whether the index can consolidate and stabilize near 42948 points, and investors should watch volatility risks.
