Taiwan equities plunged by more than 980 points intraday on the 29th, falling below the 46000-point mark, before bargain hunting narrowed the losses, closing down 667.25 points, or 1.42%, at 46368.33 points. Large-cap heavyweights were generally weak, with UMC (2303) facing heavy selling pressure, becoming the focus of the market.
Foreign Investors Sell 688億, UMC Tops Sell List
The three major institutional investors sold a combined net 816.66億元. Foreign investors reversed their previous bullish stance, selling a net 688.15億元 in a single day. Proprietary traders also turned to the sell side, selling a combined net 215億元, including a small net sale of 1.84億元 on principal trading, and a large reduction of 213.16億元 in hedging operations. Foreign investors sold a net 12萬9271 lots of UMC in a single day, ranking first in net sales.
UMC shares hit limit-down mid-session, closing at 115.5元, down 9.77%, with trading volume of 33.7萬 lots and 9308 lots queued in limit-down sell orders. Other top 10 net-sold stocks by foreign investors included Active CTBC Taiwan Income with 7萬8278 lots, AUO with 5萬0436 lots, Innolux with 4萬6307 lots, Yuanta Taiwan 50 with 4萬3090 lots, Active Uni-President Upgrade 50 with 2萬9011 lots, Active Uni-President Taiwan Growth with 2萬6238 lots, Macronix with 1萬8674 lots, Compal with 1萬6350 lots, and Taiwan Glass with 1萬4659 lots.
Investment Trusts Buy for 13th Day to Support Market, Heavyweights Weaken Together
Investment trusts showed resilience, extending their recent buying streak with another net purchase of 86.49億元 in a single day, buying Taiwan equities for 13 consecutive trading days, with total replenishment exceeding the 2028億元 level during the period. Among heavyweights, TSMC closed down 10元 at 2415元; MediaTek fell 4.49% to close at 4045元; Delta Electronics fell 70元, or 4.52%, to close at 1480元; Quanta closed at 318元, down 3.64%.
