Electronics heavyweights lead decline as index falls below half-year moving average
Taiwan stocks today (30) saw the last trading day of October. Dragged by selling pressure from US tech giant earnings and rising market doubts over returns on AI capital expenditure, the weighted index plunged more than 1600 points intraday, falling below 4萬6千點, 4萬5千點 and the half-year moving average. It ended down 1156.5 points at 45211.83 points, with turnover of 8877.3億元. MediaTek (2454) fell nearly 5% intraday and closed at 3915 yuan, down 3.21%. It will hold an earnings call this afternoon, with the market watching its fourth-quarter outlook, AI ASIC business progress and gross margin changes. Delta Electronics (2308) closed at the limit-down price of 1335 yuan, Hon Hai (2317) closed at 245.5 yuan, down 1.01%, Quanta (2382) closed flat at 318 yuan, relatively resilient, while UMC (2303), Yageo (2327) and ASE Technology Holding (3711) also came under pressure.
PCB and panels plunge as shipping becomes safe haven
By sector, PCB and AI supply chains were the focus of selling, with EMC (2383), Gold Circuit Electronics (2368), Unimicron (3037), Kinsus (3189), Zhen Ding-KY (4958) and TUC (6274) broadly weaker, with TUC hitting limit-down intraday and Gold Circuit Electronics falling nearly 9% at one point. Panel stocks were among the hardest hit, with AUO (2409) hitting limit-down, Innolux (3481) plunging 7.5%, and HannStar Display (6116) down about 4.3%, as prior gains on AI advanced packaging, glass substrate and CPO transition themes were unwound alongside the electronics correction. In contrast, shipping stocks resisted the decline, with Evergreen Marine (2603) holding up intraday, while Yang Ming (2609) and Wan Hai (2615) both closed up more than 4%.
Volatility intensifies with 3 key factors ahead
Taiwan stocks swung sharply this week, surging more than 900 points on Wednesday, retreating 667 points on Thursday, and extending losses today. Divergent earnings and outlooks from large US technology firms and questions over whether AI infrastructure investment can translate into profits dragged on global technology valuations, while small and mid-cap electronics were also sold off, with the OTC index down more than 5% intraday. Today coincided with month-end institutional position adjustments and shifts in foreign investors’ spot and futures positioning, amplifying volatility. In the short term, chips need to settle before a rebound, with whether the index can reclaim the half-year moving average and whether buying can regroup in mainstream AI, semiconductor and PCB sectors as important indicators for November.
