First-9-Month Profit Rewrites Full-Year Record
FSC statistics show pre-tax net profit of the financial trio reached New Taiwan dollars 1 trillion 2715.44 billion this year, up 77.5% year-on-year, setting not only a new high for the same period in history but also rewriting the full-year profit record just breached in August. The statistics cover the banking, insurance, and securities, futures and investment trust industries. Cumulative profit in the first 8 months had already reached NT$1 trillion 1702.35 billion, surpassing the historic record of NT$1 trillion 588 billion for full-year 2024, and September added momentum with single-month profit of about 1013.09 billion, down 670.7 billion month-on-month, but still pushing the full-year figure higher.
Banking Driven by Lending and Wealth Management
By profit structure, the banking industry accounted for the highest share at 46.7% in the first 9 months, followed by the insurance industry at 31.2%, and the securities, futures and investment trust industry at about 21.9%. Banking Bureau Deputy Director-General Zhang Jia-kui said bank profit reached 568.8 billion in September, down 45.7 billion month-on-month due to lower investment and other net gains, but still the best September performance on record. Pre-tax profit of the banking industry reached 5946.9 billion in the first 9 months, up nearly 21.9% year-on-year, including 5399 billion from domestic banks, up 18.4% year-on-year, both record highs for the same period.
Insurance Affected by U.S. Treasury Yields
Zhang Jia-kui analyzed that bank profit growth mainly came from lending growth supporting net interest income, strong wealth management momentum, and increased bond investment, driving fee income growth. For the insurance industry, with the adoption of IFRS 17 Insurance Contracts in 2026, pre-tax profit in the first 9 months was 3977 billion, compared with 1177 billion in the same period last year, but the accounting bases differ between the two years so the change cannot be directly compared. Insurance profit reached 17 billion in September, down 52.2 billion month-on-month, mainly because the sharp rebound in U.S. Treasury yields caused unrealized valuation losses on bonds held by life insurers measured at fair value through profit or loss.
Securities, Futures and Investment Trusts Up 152% Year-on-Year
Securities and Futures Bureau Deputy Director-General Huang Hou-ming said single-month profit of the securities, futures and investment trust industry was 274.29 billion in September, down 10.3 billion month-on-month, mainly as securities firms' proprietary trading performance declined from August. Total profit in the first 9 months reached 2791.54 billion, up 152% year-on-year. Among them, the securities industry benefited from higher stock market turnover than the same period last year, boosting brokerage, proprietary and underwriting businesses, with cumulative profit of 2265.3 billion, up 171% year-on-year; the investment trust industry, with assets under management rising and management fees increasing, posted cumulative profit of 401.1 billion, up 99% year-on-year; the futures industry, with gains from disposal and valuation of marketable securities from own funds, posted cumulative profit of 125.14 billion, up 74% year-on-year.
