Opened High, Closed Low, Falling Below Quarterly Line
Taiwan stocks followed U.S. stocks higher at the open last Thursday, hitting an intraday high of 47,332 points. However, as South Korean stocks resumed their decline and U.S. tech futures weakened, selling pressure emerged intraday, dragging the index down from its high to close down 846.34 points, or 1.81%, at 46,041.43 points, with turnover expanding to 8,792億元. Local institutional investors noted the index officially fell below the quarterly line, with more than 90% of stocks posting long black candles, as market sentiment turned cautious and heavy selling pressure may take time to digest in the short term.
Foreign Selling Hits Tech Stocks Hardest
Local institutional investors analyzed that this sharp plunge was mainly dragged down by South Korean stocks continuing to break to new lows, with the core reason being continued foreign investor reductions in Asian technology stocks, coupled with the high-leverage characteristics of the South Korean stock market amplifying negative news and triggering catch-up selling pressure in Taiwan stocks. Selling pressure swept across semiconductors, with market leader 台積電 (2330) slipping to 2,385元, while memory maker 南亞科 (2408) and silicon wafer maker 環球晶 (6488) moved lower in tandem. Previously hot PCB stocks 台光電 (2383), 欣興 (3037), 臻鼎-KY (4958), as well as short-term outperforming passive component leaders 國巨 (2327), 華新科 (2492), and silicon photonics CPO concept stocks boosted by mass-production news from 黃仁勳 at the Berlin GTC conference, also succumbed to pre-earnings caution and faced cascading long liquidation.
Funds Rotate Into Financials and Traditional Industries for Safety
In contrast to the sharp decline in electronics stocks, the rotation into defensive sectors was clear, with financial and shipping stocks showing resilience. In addition to fundamental support, continued ETF inflows also improved chip stability. Among them, state-owned banks and financial holdings 第一金 (2892), 兆豐金 (2886), 合庫金 (5880) and 永豐金 (2890) rallied more than 2% against the trend. In addition, 玉山金 (2884), 台泥 (1101), 長榮 (2603), 大成鋼 (2027), as well as electronics stocks 玉晶光 (3406), 信昌電 (6173), 緯創 (3231) and 富喬 (1815), leveraged individual themes or chip advantages to show resilience amid volatility, becoming rare outperformers, with follow-through momentum worth watching.
