Focus on Tech Earnings and U.S. Macroeconomic Data
The market remains focused on tech company earnings. Alphabet's third-quarter adjusted earnings per share and revenue both came in below market expectations, while the company maintained its full-year capital expenditure estimate at 195 billion to 205 billion dollars. The gap between heavy investment and earnings performance raised market concerns about returns on AI investment, sending the shares down about 12%. In after-hours trading on Thursday, Amazon moved lower as spending rose sharply to meet demand for AI services; Intel's revenue outlook came in below market expectations.
On the economic data front, the U.S. economy grew in the third quarter at its fastest pace in one year, while the personal consumption expenditures price index for September rose 0.5% month on month, the largest increase in six months. With economic resilience and inflation pressure coexisting, the Federal Reserve's subsequent interest rate policy remains in focus. Among U.S. stocks, the Dow Jones fell 132.54 points or 0.25% to 52,342.56 points; the Nasdaq fell 365.13 points or 1.38% to 26,184.72 points; the S&P 500 fell 23.59 points or 0.30% to 7,720.39 points; and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 165.80 points or 1.42% to 11,518.20 points. 台積電 futures ended the after-hours session down 30 or 1.24% at 2,390.
