Causes of T+2 Settlement Failure and Subsequent Liability
Taiwan stocks generally adopt the T+2 settlement system, meaning on the second business day after the trade date, buyers must have funds ready and sellers must deliver shares as required. If an investor fails to provide sufficient settlement funds within the deadline, preventing the broker from completing settlement, it may constitute a settlement default. Common causes include misjudging account balances, insufficient funds for short-term trading, and failure to properly arrange funds required for multiple trades.
Once a default occurs, the broker will handle the unsettled positions under relevant regulations, and may dispose of them or seek compensation. If shares need to be sold, related transactions may also increase short-term chip movements in individual stocks. However, whether a single case further affects the share price still depends on the case size, shareholding conditions and market trading, and cannot be judged solely by the reported amount as inevitably leading to a price decline. For defaulting investors, subsequent default liability, loss compensation and trading restrictions may apply, along with trading or account-opening restrictions for a certain period. Whether credit card, credit loan or mortgage applications are affected depends on the actual reporting situation and the financial institutions' review standards. If insufficient settlement funds are found, investors should immediately contact their brokerage salesperson to confirm the payment deadline, amount due and available handling methods, to avoid delays that expand losses.
