TAIEX Falls 4.51% as ETF Trading Surges
Taipei stocks faced rare historic selling pressure today (6th), with the TAIEX closing down 1873.08 points, or 4.51%, at 39701.64 points, falling below the 40000-point mark. Funds flowed into ETFs, with Yuanta Taiwan 50 (0050) closing at NT$92.50, down NT$4.65, or 4.79%, on trading volume of about 943 million shares, or about 943,200 lots, showing ETF trading heated up明显 as the market slumped and investor trading turned more active.
Leveraged 2X ETFs Both Fall Nearly 10%, Rank Among Top 3 by Volume
Leveraged ETF trading was even hotter. Capital Taiwan Weighted Leverage 2X (00685L) closed at NT$8.56, down NT$0.94, or 9.89%, with volume of about 1,566,500 lots; Yuanta Taiwan 50 Leverage 2X (00631L) closed at NT$26.30, down NT$2.91, or 9.96%, with volume of about 1,319,600 lots. The two combined totaled nearly 2,886,100 lots, both ranking among the top 3 by daily volume, showing sharply higher trading activity. Both 2X ETFs ended down nearly 10%, reflecting heavy trading and long-short turnover amid violent market swings.
00685L Suspends Primary-Market Creations, Warns of Premium/Discount Risk
Capital Investment Trust announced today that its 00685L has suspended primary-market creation orders from 9:00 a.m. that day, citing severe market volatility that may prevent buying enough constituent securities of the underlying index in futures or securities markets. The firm also reminded investors to watch ETF premium/discount risks during volatile periods, urging investors to understand primary- and secondary-market mechanisms and possible price deviations before trading, and to carefully assess their own risk tolerance.
Heavy Volume Does Not Equal Dip-Buying; Watch Decay in Leveraged ETFs
Notably, higher volume does not mean all investors are buying the dip. Every trade has both a buyer and a seller, so institutional buy/sell data, margin changes, and beneficiary counts are still needed to judge fund flows. As for 2X ETFs, they seek twice the single-day return of the underlying index, not necessarily twice the long-term cumulative return. When markets swing continuously, daily leverage rebalancing can cause cumulative returns to diverge from the long-term index trend. Investors should mind volatility risks and their own tolerance, read the prospectus carefully before subscribing, and build correct investment concepts to minimize loss risk.
