Double-Digit Growth in Online Insurance in First Three Quarters
According to FSC statistics, online insurance purchases across the insurance industry in the first three quarters of 2026 totaled 8.335 million policies, with premium income of 5.436 billion yuan, up 17.79% and 18.17% respectively from the same period in 2025. Continued growth in outbound travel demand has made travel-related coverage the best-selling online products for both non-life and life insurers, becoming the main driver of overall performance.
Non-Life Accounts for Over 90%, Life Posts Steady Growth
Non-life insurers remained the largest segment of the online insurance market, with 7.2688 million policies and 4.964 billion yuan in premiums in the first three quarters, up 18.21% and 19.79% year on year, accounting for over 90% of the overall market by premium. Life insurers recorded 1.0662 million policies and 472 million yuan in premium income, up 15% and 3.28% year on year, maintaining double-digit growth in policy count but with relatively limited premium growth.
Travel Package Insurance and Travel Accident Insurance Most Popular
For non-life insurers, travel package insurance including travel inconvenience insurance was the most popular, selling 1.7316 million policies with 1.163 billion yuan in premiums in the first three quarters, up 23.39% and 43.76% year on year. Motorcycle insurance ranked second with 1.4707 million policies, but premiums reached 1.496 billion yuan, higher than travel package insurance. Growth in travel medical coverage was even more pronounced, with travel package insurance with additional reimbursement-type accidental medical coverage selling 1.2788 million policies with 148 million yuan in premiums, up 28.24% and 48% year on year, posting the highest premium growth among best-selling products and reflecting travelers' demand for stronger overseas medical protection through online channels.
Top Three Life Products All Travel-Related
The top three online life insurance products were all travel-related. Travel accident insurance ranked first with 361,500 policies and 118 million yuan in premiums, followed by travel accident insurance with additional overseas emergency illness medical coverage with 318,500 policies and 101 million yuan in premiums, and third was travel accident insurance with additional reimbursement-type accidental medical coverage with 284,200 policies and 38 million yuan in premiums.
Limits Relaxed, Company Rankings Released
In addition to rising travel demand, the gradual relaxation of online insurance limits has also given the public more choices. The FSC this year raised the cap on medical insurance benefits for online insurance for insured persons under age 15 to 1.2 million yuan, allowing parents taking children to Schengen countries and other overseas destinations to purchase higher medical coverage through online channels. By premium income in the first three quarters, the top three life insurers were Fubon Life, Cathay Life and KGI Life, while Fubon Insurance led non-life insurers, followed by Tokio Marine Newa Insurance in second and Cathay Century Insurance in third.
